Day One at the Orphanage

Today was a good day, but tough for me! We went to the orphanage this morning. The orphanage director, Mrs. Zhun, and the government official that we met last year, Mr. Zao, met us downstairs and escorted our bus to the orphanage. They took us inside one of the other buildings in the compounds first and had a beautiful boardroom decorated with a big banner that said "Welcome American Friends" and cherries and watermelon for all of us. Then they took us on a tour of the mental hospital next door to the orphanage. I am sure that no where else in China would we have been allowed to do that, but since we have a relationship with them and they trust us, they toured us through it. The sweet little patients all clapped for us when we entered and some even knew a little English! They were cute! We then got to go play with the kids. My baby girl from last year was there and her hair has grown so much, but she was scared of me. She warmed up a little to me later in the morning, but not too much. Here she is with Lucy, another girl that was here last year! We left for lunch and John and I had to go shopping with Mrs. Zhun and Mr. Zao for the needs of the orphanage. It was hard for me because I really want to be there with the kids. I have decided (since all I did was hold the money and write down what we purchased) to stay at the orphanage tomorrow and allow John to go with them and shop. He enjoys Mr. Zao, even if he speaks no English. The rest of the group had a great time this afternoon and said that my baby girl opened up a lot this afternoon. The rest of the group brought three of the nannies and seven kids back into town to their foster homes this afternoon. That is a lot different than last year! I am writing this in stages, so we just returned from dinner where Mrs. Zhun and Mr. Zao treated us to a hot pot dinner. They bring out thinly sliced meat (mutton and beef) and you cook it in your own little pot of boiling water seasoned with different spices! It was incredible and we all agreed that it was the best meal that we have ever eaten in China! We all stuffed ourselves. Our group is so much fun and Mrs. Zhun fits right in because she is so witty! We have lots of fun with her and are learning to communicate through the language difference. She started doing fun little dances for us and posing for cheesy pictures. We have really built a good relationship with them and they treat us like family. We learned tonight that they are working hard to get the paperwork for the children prepared so that they can be adopted. I also learned that my baby girl (Mei Mei) has been placed with a family. I am not sure where they are from, but I am so excited that she is getting a home and a family. John and I also clowned around with some characters outside the restaurant! We are headed to bed to prepare for another day at the orphanage...can't wait! Check our Fushun 2008 blog (link to the left) for more pictures!
